Step-by-Step Guide: Building a DIY Back to the Future DeLorean Costume | How To Tutorial

Explore how we built a homemade DeLorean time machine replica, inspired by the iconic Back to the Future films, using everyday items and creative DIY techniques.

The DeLorean Time Machine, immortalised by the 1980s film Back to the Future, has become one of the most iconic sci-fi vehicles in history.

When John DeLorean founded his car company in 1981, he could hardly have imagined that his struggling venture would one day become a legendary symbol in the annals of science fiction.

“Wait a minute, Doc. Are you telling me that you built a time machine … out of a DeLorean ?!”

In 1986, Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale selected his DMC aluminium vehicle as the time machine of choice for Doc Brown, Marty McFly (and even Biff) .. allowing them to navigate a perfectly crafted timeline.

The DMC DeLorean appears in all three BTTF films, each time with different modifications. It's so extensively documented online that you can easily find images from every angle to help with your homemade build. Aside from the Dr. Emmett Brown costume (available for £20 on eBay), we had everything we needed right at home.

A homemade time machine inspired by the DMC DeLorean from Back to the Future. The vehicle is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, featuring silver panels, wires, and improvised gadgets to mimic the iconic look. It’s clear that creativity and household items were used to replicate the film's time-traveling car, capturing the essence of the original design.

We had an absolute blast creating this costume and are thrilled that our kids love the Back to the Future franchise just as much as "those people from the '80s" - a.k.a. their parents. Enjoy!
